Volunteer Pampers Valley Cancer Patients

by Julie Brown December 4, 2011
written by Julie Brown December 4, 2011

cancer charity foundationWhen Las Sendas resident Jill Hering looks in the mirror, she sees a healthy mother, homemaker and passionate community volunteer, but, somewhere in the Valley, a cancer patient sees self-doubt, anxiety and the physical toll of cancer treatments.

Thanks to volunteers like Jill and the Face in the Mirror Foundation, cancer patients are learning to love their reflection and rediscover their outer and inner beauty.

Jill has made volunteering a part of her life since she was a young adult. She has been active with several organizations, but her work with Face in the Mirror over the past two years has been some of her most rewarding experiences.

“I feel like I get so much more out of volunteering than I give,” explained Jill. “It feels good to be able to help others, and it gives me a greater appreciation for everything I have.”

Face in the Mirror enhances the outward beauty of cancer patients, both men and women, and ultimately, their well being, by pampering them with facials, massages, beauty products and accessories, such as wigs, hats and scarves. They work with various hospitals throughout the Valley, and host tea party events for cancer patients, survivors and their families.

“It’s unbelievable to see the transformation that happens and the confidence patients gain when you help them to look and feel good about themselves,” shared Jill. “It’s great to be there to help them during a tough part of their lives.”

Jill hopes to inspire others to help organizations, such as Face in the Mirror, since they are always in need of support, volunteers and donations. “Unfortunately, cancer affects too many people,” Jill said. “So, the need is never-ending.”

Face in the Mirror currently is looking for volunteers to help with their hospital programs, including at Banner Desert Medical Center, where they offer the spa-like Relaxation Retreat for the pampering of patients.

“We’re looking for people, who can commit at least four hours a week,” added Face in the Mirror Volunteer Coordinator Sylvia Corella. “We offer a training program for volunteers, and an incredible experience in helping others.”
