Studies show women are more stressed than men

written by Red Mountain Family Chiropractic January 28, 2011

women are more stressed than menWomen are surpassing men in some areas of modern life, appearing to be way ahead in at least one undesirable category.

“Women are particularly susceptible to developing depression, anxiety and pain syndromes in response to stress compared to men,” said Dr. Lynn Knuth of Red Mountain Family Chiropractic.

Harvard’s Mind Body Medical Institute states 70 to 90 percent of all disease and illness is caused by stress. “Studies show stressed out female rats had higher stress responses until their ovaries were removed. Then, their stress was equal to male rats. So it’s clear there’s a hormone connection.”

Dr. Knuth feels clinics of the future will have to focus on the whole person, and the stresses they face in their lives are emerging as a consequence. Stress intervention is certainly not new, and there is very good research, which suggests interventions based on current stress reduction techniques are highly efficacious for such diverse conditions as:

  • pain syndromes (headache, low back pain, neck pain)

  • gastrointestinal problems

  • premenstrual syndrome and menopausal hot flashes

  • infertility

  • cardiovascular disease

  • insomnia

  • immune system disorders

“I find that the chiropractic work I do is enhanced greatly by counseling women in every aspect of their lives, from diet, exercise and ergonomics in the home and the workplace, to providing stress techniques, which help reduce the anxiety, depression and pain,” Dr. Knuth said. “With the help of Dr. Joanne Feaster, a naturopathic medical doctor, to help balance hormonal imbalances, this is a prescription for a less stressed and more enjoyable life.”
