Self Development Charter School offers new classes, exciting clubs

soccer playing at self developmentWhile involvement in rigorous coursework is the single most important predictor of success in higher education, hands-on activities and fresh material provide the motivation and inspiration to ensure the road to success is enjoyable.

Self Development Charter School (SDCS) makes both of these important elements a priority. In addition to the established curriculum and enrichment activities at SDCS, the following programs are new to students this year:

Technology-Integrated Science Labs: While all students, grades first through eighth, participate in hands-on science labs, older students will incorporate technology in their science labs, starting in the spring semester. Students, grades sixth through eighth, will participate in computer-based activities like virtual dissections, viewing the classroom microscope on all computers and creating graphs and lab reports.

Latin: Students in seventh and eighth grades have the option of Latin as a foreign language through an online course. Students meet three days a week with an SDCS supervisor, and together they access assignments and post assignments online. The Latin teacher reviews assignments and sends e-mails to the students, offering feedback. This course teaches not only the Latin curriculum, but also distance-learning through technology, much like a college course.

After-School Sports Club: SDCS offers an educational approach to sports through an after-school club. Students learn the fundamentals of the games, as well as the basic skills to play. Through intramural competitions, students compete and hone their talents. In the spring, SDCS students will compete with other students across the state in the Grand Canyon State Games.

Percussion: Students in fourth through eighth grades may participate in the percussion program. Students receive a solid foundation in music through learning proper percussion techniques, a mathematical approach to playing rhythms, as well as performance skills and experience. Students also may participate in the SDCS violin program.

At SDCS, we believe in providing students with plenty of opportunities to explore their interests and expand their perspectives. In addition to the opportunities listed above, SDCS offers a tutoring club, the National Junior Honor Society, a literary analysis program, a Greek mythology class, as well as a Math Counts competition, class plays and field trips.

SDCS is now accepting applications for enrollment for the 2011-2012 school year. The enrollment deadline is Jan. 31, 2011, and there is no tuition cost to students. For more information, please call (480) 641-2640, or e-mail info@selfdevelopmentcharterschool.com.

Self Development Charter School is a publicly funded, accelerated school, which has received Arizona’s excelling school ranking for six consecutive years. Teaching one grade level above Arizona standards, SDCS is one of the top performing schools in the state.
