Self Development Charter School Moving Beyond the Curriculum

self development charter musicSelf Development Charter School (SDCS) received the Charter School of the Year award from the Arizona Charter Schools Association.

SDCS’s dedication to providing a high-quality educational experience to all students is among the many reasons the school received this honor.

Although a heavy emphasis is placed upon providing a strong academic curriculum to the students, SDCS is committed to providing a variety of extra-curricular activities year round. Some of the extra-curricular activities at SDCS include violin and percussion lessons, Dance Club, Math Counts and Sports Club. Students have the opportunity to participate in weekly violin (Suzuki method) and percussion classes.

Through Dance Club, students are exposed to a wide variety of music and dance genres. Students have a chance to showcase their talents during the month of May with end-of-the-year performances for Dance Club, violin and percussion.

This year, participation in Sports Club prepared students to compete in the Grand Canyon Games, which included a jump rope contest and basketball tournament.

Students also competed in a Math League competition held at Arizona State University. Other students demonstrated their math skills in various Math Counts competitions.

Additionally, each class (first through eighth grades) performs a play in which every student has a part. Students create props and sets, too. This year, the seventh- and eighth-graders performed Medio Pollito (The Little Half Chicken), a Spanish folk tale. The play was performed in both English and Spanish. Students enrolled in Spanish classes at SDCS had a chance to demonstrate their Spanish language skills.

Self Development Charter School is a publicly funded school providing kindergarten through eighth-grade education. Again, in addition to a strong educational program, SDCS offers students a well-rounded education!
