School Is In With Herbs

Remember the thrill and the fear we felt as we embarked on another school year? The excitement but also the challenges of being confined in close quarters with all those fellow students and teachers, flu bugs, and other bacteria and viruses.

Now that school is in full swing, there is no need to worry though because there are herbal remedies that can help our children (and parents) stay healthy, well-rested, and alert.

SLEEP TIGHT

We all know the importance of a good night’s sleep. Using simple herbs can guide us into a peaceful, regenerative sleep and awaken us with a clear mind. So, here’s a recipe to improve your sleep:

• 1 oz Catnip (mild, gentle sedative effect)

• 2 oz Chamomile (promotes sleep, helps to calm stress)

 • 1 oz Oat straw (calms the nervous system, reduces anxiety)

• 0.5 oz Passion flower (reduces activity in the central nervous system)

• 1 oz Spearmint (tastes yummy and promotes general relaxation)

• Stevia or honey to taste

Mix herbs and store them in a glass jar. Put eight teaspoons of the herb blend and eight cups water in a large pot, cover tightly, and bring to a simmer. Turn off heat and leave covered overnight or for several hours. Strain herbs out and store tea in refrigerator. Drink hot or cold, with dinner or a cup before bedtime.

SW Herb Shop & Gathering Place is located at 148 N. Center St. in Mesa. Visit SWHerb.com or call (480) 694-9931.
