Red Mountain High golf tournamentRed Mountain High School Boy’s Golf Team took on their competition at Alta Mesa Golf Club (AMGC) in September and led the pack.

In the first tournament match, Red Mountain scored 148 against teams from Dobson, which scored 172; Skyline, which scored 174; and Campo Verde, scoring 183.

In the final match against Mountain Pointe High School, from Ahwatukee, they tied at 148. In each competition, five-man teams played nine holes, counting the four lowest scores.

Red Mountain team members are Marley Sweeney, Kyle Kirkpatrick, Mitch Martinson, Cory Cottrell, Frank Berguin, Austin Kirkpatrick, Kolton Lapa, J.T. Rodenkirch, Colton West and Brett Wilson.

Coach Rich Hamilton said both Alta Mesa and Red Mountain Ranch golf clubs have encouraged and supported the golf team’s activities for many years. “We play about half our matches at Alta Mesa Golf Club and the rest at Red Mountain Ranch Country Club,” the coach said. “We have two or three tournaments at each club during the season, and both clubs also allow the team to practice at their facilities several times a week at no charge to the school,” he continued. “Three of our team players are members at Alta Mesa, and two belong to Red Mountain.”

Both Alta Mesa and Red Mountain Ranch golf clubs claim active junior golf programs. “The club welcomes the opportunity to provide a place for young people to develop their golfing skills to a higher level,” said Alta Mesa Golf Club Membership Coordinator Kim Hind. “Alta Mesa junior members have achieved 5A Regional Team Champion status for Red Mountain,” she further stated. “In addition, AMGC junior members have won many golf industry titles, such as United States Golf Association Junior Amateur Champions, and earned golf scholarships to Arizona State University and other universities.”

AMGC provides junior clinics, offering a comprehensive, informative and fun experience for children from 7 to 17. Non-members are welcome to join members at the clinics on a space-available basis. The fee is $20. For more information, call Kim Hind at (480) 832-3257.
