Prepare the Body to Make the Swing

by Ryan Bell March 2, 2020
written by Ryan Bell March 2, 2020

As spring nears, many will get back into the swing of things and enjoy the lovely greens the Valley of the Sun has to offer, while realizing one of the beauties of golf is the mere fact you can spend a lifetime playing and perfecting the game.

Golf requires a great deal of skill and perseverance to truly excel. Unfortunately, most golfers typically will experience some injury during their time spent playing the game. The extent of the injury and severity varies from small nagging injuries to a debilitating injury that could keep you from loving the game.

Typical injuries that can be seen from golf are due to mechanical impairments of the body and overuse that can result in pain and tend to affect the desired swing.

You may have heard about a golfer suffering from an injury explain how he has changed his swing to avoid symptoms. However, he cannot drive the ball down the fairway quite as far now. The body is resilient in its attempts to create compensations to resolve pain, but this also compromises the performance.

Oftentimes, the decrease in performance is due to a lack of resources that the body needs to create a powerful and accurate swing. Essentially, when playing golf, the body has to have the proper/sufficient mobility, stability, strength and endurance.

It is important that all of these aspects are addressed while performing exercises and activities that both look and feel like golf. Local golf pros, trainers and physical therapists trained in golf performance are an important piece of improving your golf game.

Here at Spooner Physical Therapy, we have qualified physical therapists to help you rehab your preexisting golf injures. We also have a certified functional golf specialist (FGS) who can help you develop/tailor an exercise program that is authentic to the game. Our goal is to address the mechanical deficits to enhance movement and allow the player to make the desired swing.

Spooner Physical Therapy, in North Mesa, is located at 6824 E. Brown Road. To learn more, call (480) 924-5514, or visit spoonerpt.com/locations/north-mesa.
