Motorcycle Ministry Serves Less Fortunate

by Kimberly Searles October 2, 2014

WAY RIDERZ PICThe Way Riderz is a group of accepting and loving motorcycle riders who, aside from being bike enthusiasts, bring joy and hope to the homeless and less fortunate, through fellowship, outreach and ministry.

In 2010, Gary and Ronda Obenstine felt compelled to start a chapter in Arizona after meeting The Way Riderz, from Sacramento, Calif. Ronda is the first lady and Gary is the president. There is no downtime for these two dynamos. They constantly are planning, prepping and ministering. With only seven members, they are a group of energetic and uplifting people who are driven to make a difference.

Whether feeding the homeless once a month, in Tempe, serving food for the staff and customers, at Eagle Riders Motorcycle Rental locations, or providing their food pantry—with no strings attached, The Way Riderz are inspirational. They are a family, a united fellowship of bikers and non-bikers, of all ages. Together, Nathaniel and Ronda, joined by Gary’s 7-year-old son, head up the Children’s Ministry, lead the prayer over the food, or welcome newcomers to the food pantry.

Kim and Marty, who have suffered many physical challenges, treasure the family feeling of the group. Being involved makes them focus on others’ needs and less on their own. Vice President Kevin has embraced the ministries of the group. “They give me a purpose for each day, a reason to live and to change lives,” he stated. “The ministries allow me to give back to others in need.”  His wife Teresa, a non-biker, but a dedicated and motivated member, is learning to ride. “I feel accepted and a sense of belonging with The Way Riderz,” she admitted.

Teaming up with various churches, businesses and food stores, they are able to provide a range of items for the less fortunate people of the community. “Let God’s light and goodness shine through us,” Ronda said. “It is an opportunity to give people who are down on their luck a step up.”

Members of The Way Riderz agree they are a family. They are loved and valued. With their servants’ hearts, they are able to bring joy and hope to the less fortunate people in their community.
