Massages are for every body

by Dawn Abbey October 31, 2015

COSMOS MASSAGE COLLEEN BROSNAN PICWhether it’s for pain relief, sports training, injury or just relaxation, licensed massage therapist Colleen Brosnan, at Cosmos Salon and Day Spa, believes every body can benefit from massage.

In fact, Cosmos owners Sandra and Cosmo Barbetta are such proponents of massage therapy, the spa is offering a full-hour Swedish or therapeutic massage in November for $50 to new clients when they mention this article.

“Some think of massage as a luxury or an indulgence, but there are very specific health benefits from massage therapy,” Colleen said. “Cosmos offers a variety of massage therapies, and we can customize our treatments to every individual. In addition, we include aromatherapy with every massage at no additional charge.”

According to Colleen, people often are confused as to what types of massage are needed.

“For instance, we offer a Mini Stress Relief 30-minute massage that focuses on the neck, back and shoulders, and is great for stress relief, headaches or just to unwind from a bad day,” Colleen stated. “Mini massages also are helpful if there is a specific pain area, like sciatica or a pulled muscle, and the client just wants attention to that.”

An extended version of this is the Focused Tension Relief Massage, combining it with heated stone therapy to provide deeper relaxation to tense muscles.

Cosmos Relaxation Massage is a Swedish massage using light strokes to aid in circulation, range of motion and relaxation. “This is probably our most popular massage because it is very relaxing, and is especially beneficial for the elderly or those who cannot tolerate deep tissue work,” Colleen said.

Cosmos Signature Heated Stone Massage adds heated stones, warm towels and essential oils to Swedish massage techniques for the ultimate in relaxation.

The Therapeutic Massage employs medium to firm pressure to relieve overworked and tired muscles and targets specific muscle groups. “We also refer to this as our Sports Massage because it is very popular with golfers and others who participate in sports regularly,” Colleen explained. “It helps with range of motion and muscle stretching.”

Students who play sports also can benefit from the Therapeutic Massage. “Parents of high-school athletes often encourage their kids to have massages during training, and before and after events,” Colleen stated. “Muscles that are more limber are less likely to incur injury.”

Cosmos offers moms-to-be a Great Expectations Massage. A light touch is applied to increase circulation, help reduce edema and relieve neck and back pain.

“All total body massages include a sugar polish or salt glow scrub for exfoliation and to smooth the skin,” Colleen added.

Colleen, who has been with Cosmos for five years, earned her massage therapy license at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts a decade ago, and takes continuing education classes on new techniques and therapies.

Cosmos Salon and Day Spa is located at the northeast corner of Power and McDowell roads. For information, or to schedule an appointment, call (480) 844-0707.
