Local residents form organization to offer recurrent support for Haiti

haiti relief aidWhen Deacon Bernie Filzen and Art Brouillard met at a church function a few years ago, they never could have predicted their friendship would provide the foundation to form a local nonprofit organization in support of a country almost 3,000 miles away.

A little over a year ago, Action By Christians (ABC) For Haiti was formed in response to the devastating January 2010 earthquake that affected more than 3 million Haitians and killed more than 300,000 residents.

“On Aug. 6, 2010, we received official notice from the Arizona Corporation Commission that our Articles of Incorporation had been approved,” said ABC For Haiti President Art Brouillard.  “Sometimes, when I talk to people about our organization, people ask, ‘Why Haiti? Why not help those right in your own backyard?’ I believe God wants us to help our neighbors across the street as much as he wants us to help our neighbors across the world.”

That calling prompted Art and Deacon Filzen, a longtime Haiti advocate and missionary, to support the need firsthand. In addition to annual mission trips to Haiti, the organization also:

  • Provides monthly stipends to a rural Haitian parish.

  • Collects donations year round for basic supplies, such as food, educational materials and clothing.

  • Supports the development of a local trade center and scholarships for Haitian students who cannot afford an education.

One of ABC For Haiti’s immediate fund-raising goals is to secure resources for a primitive but effective two-bucket water system, which can help area villages and communities use water safely. Once fulfilled, this most basic need will provide a solid foundation for the people of Haiti to focus on other core needs, such as education and trade skills.

“The country’s greatest need right now is for clean water systems to prevent water borne diseases, such as cholera, which causes terrible sickness and even death. The systems cost about $50 each. However, our goal is not only to provide basic needs within each of these communities, but also to develop resources, which enable the communities to be self-sustaining,” Art said. “Ultimately, we want to provide educational opportunities, job opportunities and a healthier lifestyle for these residents, particularly those in rural areas where resources are more scarce.”

ABOUT ABC FOR HAITI

ABC For Haiti is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing recurrent support for the residents of Haiti, particularly those in rural areas. The organization was formed on Aug. 6, 2010, following one of the most devastating earthquakes in recorded history. ABC For Haiti’s core activities include sharing resources for basic needs, such as emergency food supplies, purchasing and installing clean water systems, developing trade schools and providing sponsorships for students.
