Lifelong Educator Makes a Lasting Impression

by Self Development Academy September 1, 2016
written by Self Development Academy September 1, 2016

SELF DEVELOPMENT PIC SEPTEMBER 2016 copyThe Self Development Academy (SDA) community was devastated to learn of the sudden passing, this past July, of G. Robert Meko, who joined the staff three years ago.

During his time at SDA, Mr. Meko made a positive impact on the greater school community. Understanding the daily operations of a school, he never hesitated to assist with any task. On a daily basis, he could be found greeting parents and students in the car lines and helping students with their lunches in the cafeteria, as well as teaching groups of students around the campus.

He was most famous for his ducks, which he hid around campus for students to find and turn in for a prize and, of course, his love of the Diamondbacks.

Some of the SDA parents were Mr. Meko’s students decades ago. They fondly remembered their elementary school days under his direction, and looked forward to their children having the opportunity to develop a relationship with and be taught by him.

Having earned a reputation as a passionate, child-centered educator, with more than 40 years experience in the field of education, the majority of which was in Mesa, the SDA community was thrilled when he first arrived on campus.

As the sad news spread through the local community, SDA received countless phone calls of support.

Parents and students shared their many warm memories of Mr. Meko. Here are some of the many comments shared:

Mr. Meko is a treasure. He always was positive and nurturing, and he inspired the students.

I will miss seeing his warm smile every morning when I drop off my children at school.

Mr. Meko created an atmosphere of discovery, exploration and wonder.

Mr. Meko was one of the greatest teachers ever.

SDA students adored him, and could always be heard saying, “Hi, Mr. Meko.” He always turned, smiled and greeted each student. The SDA campus will not be the same without him.
