It is Important to Exercise Caution and Get a Second Opinion

My mom recently called, and asked me to look over a piece of mail she had received, which looked like a legitimate bill, but she was not sure.

The letter looked official. The details in the letter made it personal. It was confusing, but, after careful reading, it was a solicitation, and not a Payment Due letter.

I said to mom, “If someone is asking you to send them money, make sure to get out your magnifying glass, and read the fine print. Don’t send anyone money who asks you by mail or over the phone unless you are 100 percent sure it is legitimate.” Marketers are very good at making their solicitations look like a bill.

There are a lot of mail and phone scams targeting the elderly. If you did not initiate the call, or ask for information to be sent to you, be especially careful. Don’t be afraid to ask someone else to look it over if you are not sure.

Mom was grateful for the second opinion, and I was glad she called.
