by Mesa Public Schools October 31, 2018
written by Mesa Public Schools October 31, 2018

Seniors from Mesa, Mountain View and Westwood high schools have been named to the elite list of students recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced six Mesa Public Schools seniors were named semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Less than 1 percent of high school seniors nationwide are eligible.

The district semifinalists are:

  • Wyatt Appel and Anne Hatch, fromMesa High School.
  • Cody Daniels, Jordan Gardiner and Dalin Stuart, from Mountain View High School.
  • Alex Vuong, from Westwood High School.

According to the sponsoring organization, these academically talented students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million, which will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
